The process of drying the conductive SCOBY paste
The haptic sensor with conductive SCOBY paste

Metal structure, processed bacterial cellulose, haptic sensors with conductive SCOBY, directional spotlightsThe SymbioSanctum project aims to pull the viewer out of an anthropocentric experience and immerse them in a world of multi-sensory engagement with the symbiosis of otherwise invisible microorganisms within the human body. The artists designed a structure covered in dried and processed bacterial cellulose (SCOBY), which they cultivated themselves with the help of bacteria and yeast. The form and aesthetic of the installation are inspired by Gothic architecture; the project thus functions as a sacred pedestal for the idealism of the holobiont.

In the SymbioSanctum sanctuary, the roles of humans and microorganisms are reversed. Haptic sensors allow visitors to interact with the structure via a light interface. By touching the organic surface of the bacterial cellulose, light sources are activated, illuminating the Gothic structure and creating an effect on the visitor akin to so-called beatific visions (*visio beatifica* in Latin). The secrets of the bacterial leather processing, engraved into it, are gradually revealed to the viewer through touch.
